Metaphor

Metaphor

Metaphors are the comparison of two unlike things. A Metaphor is "something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol." An example from a poem called "Peace."

"The wind is now
a roaring, smashing,
monster of destruction,
raking all man's work
from the vales,
and sends them spinning,
broken flying"-
This first stanza we can see how the "wind" is being compared to a "monster of destruction". The wind is part of nature and is strong that destroys it said the "wind is now roaring" is warning that he is about to arrive, animals roar and they roar when they are mad or hungry. This can be described as the wind is not being happy.

"Raking all man's work....sends them spinning" the strength of the wind is so powerful that destroys the work that the people have created including the valleys making them disappear into the air when the wind blows. It sends whatever it can flying away and never be found. It can send it flying, then makes a mess that can't be fixed.

The poem can be expressed as a storm that is about to approach the valley. The people in the valley should be aware of the damages that the wind can cause. The wind have no compassion for the people's valleys or whatever it's in his way.

The other type of metaphors are anthropomorphism is used with God or goddesses. "The act of attributing human forms or qualities to an entities which are not human. Specifically, anthropomorphism is the describing of gods or goddesses in human forms and possessing human characteristics such as jealousy, hatred, or love." Example of anthropomorphism will be Poseidon was god of the sea. This is a Greek myth Poseidon is know as the god of water and the brother of Zeus. These is a good example of anthropomorphism we see how people gave qualities of humans to an an entities which are not humans really.

Hyperbole is exaggeration or overstatement. Example for exaggeration "It is going to take a bazillion years to get through Medical School." This person exaggerates said will take her years and years to finishing medical school cause a person can not life for bazillion years. Hyperbole is an exaggeration that people said to statements most of the time.

A parable is a "a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth, religious principle, or moral lesson. A statement or comment that conveys a meaning indirectly by the use of comparison, analogy, or the like."

Fable is "a short tale to teach a moral lesson, often with animals or inanimate objects as characters.

Analogy is "the comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship. The key is to ascertain the relationship between the first so you can choose the correct second pair. Part to whole, opposites, results of are types of relationships you should find."

"Simile is the comparison of two unlike things using "like or as". Related to metaphor." An a example of simile am going to use an elephant cartoon . One of the men in the cartoon is holding the elephant trunk and tell the others guys"An elephant is like an empty oil pipeline." As we see in in the sentence they using the word like to compare the elephant to an empty pipeline that makes it a simile they compare two thing that are different using like or as. The elephant trunk is being compared to the oil pipeline.

Another example of simile is using it from the same cartoon another guy said "An elephant is like a disconnected phone line." These sentences are also using like this time the elephant is being compared to a disconnected phone line.

"Fear knocked on the door. Faith answered. There was no one there." This is an example of personification the person who wrote this is describing Fear as if it is a person and faith fear and faith are emotions that people feel faith people that can go and knock a door.

Other metaphors are "Personification is giving human qualities to animals or objects." In "The Train" by Emily Dickinson we as the train is being compared to a person.

"I like to see it lap the miles,
And lick the valleys up,
And stop to feed itself at tanks;
And then, prodigious, step."

"And lick the valleys up" these can be interpret the train is long and in other words is compared to a tongue of a human as the train passes to other stations stop to get people . Dickinson gave the train qualities of humans to a train these is a good example of personification.

Using two examples "A Book" of Emily Dickinson poems we going to describe what type of metaphors are the author using in her poem.

A Book

There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any courser like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toil;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!

Emily In this poem, she is using simile we can see that she is using like. In the first stanza Dickinson wrote "frigate like a book" this is an example of simile.

The Stone
How happy is the little stone
That rambles in the road alone,
And doesn't care about careers,
And exigencies never fears;
Whose coat of elemental brown
A passing universe put on;
And independent as the sun,
Associates or glows alone,
Fulfilling absolute decree
In casual simplicity.

This is a poem by Emily Dickinson in this poem called "The Stone" we can see how she is using personification . In the first stanza Dickinson describes an object being happy. Dickinson is giving the stone qualities of a human, stones don't have feelings the stone don't have to worry about careers, the stone is an object that has not feeling , can't think walk ,talk and Dickinson is adding to the stone qualities of humans.

"Metaphors are used to help us understand the unknown, because we use what we know in comparison with something we don't know to get a better understanding of the unknown." "A Roller Coaster - Life consists of ups and downs, and we are along for the ride." Metaphors can be when people talk express what they feel any type of way metaphors can be use. I can use a type of metaphor and maybe don't even know it. Metaphors can apply to my daily day of life can be a metaphor of motivation or sadness were I can express a story.
