Irony

Irony

Irony is "to say one thing but to mean the opposite. "That may be the simplest definition of irony. The Majority of the time people say one thing and mean another. An example of irony is a poem "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson . In this poem we see how people describe Richard as a gentleman, a good person. The people put them selves as low class "We people on the pavement looked at him:" in the pavement what we see are gum , pennies, garbage people looked up to him. The people admire Richard they liked him. "In fine, we thought he was everything"for the people Richard was everything but there most have been going on with him that the people didn't know. He was admired, and liked by the people why would he put a bullet through his head. Maybe he had something to hide or he had a guilty conscience.

"The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant is another example of irony. In this story we see how a lower class woman suffers from the poorness of her house. Mathilde is married to clerk in the minister of education "She had no clothes, no jewels, nothing. And these were the only things she loved;". Mathilde and her husband were invited to a dinner with fancy people. Mathilde didn't have a dress for the occasion her husband to please her gave her four hundred francs but for Mathilde that was not enough she was complaining she didn't have a necklace to go with her dress. Mathilde husband told her to ask her friend Madame Forestier to lean her a necklace. Madame Forestier agreed to lean her a necklace. On Mathilde way back home from the party in the apartment she realize she was not wearing the necklace no more. They came to a jewelery store were they had a similar necklace they were looking for but it was worth forty thousand france. Mathilde had to work to pay the debt the money borred to buy the necklace. The irony about this story is that the necklace that madame Forestier had lean Mathilde was a imitation. She had told Mathilde is most had costed her five hundred francs. Mathilde trying to be someone she is not she had to suffer trying to pay for a necklace she lost when her friend had bought a imitation not a real diamond necklace.

Another example of irony is in "The House that Slaves Built" by Gardiner Harris. "The White House was built by crews of black laborers—both slave and free." The White House was built by black slaves and free slave and after 200 years we have a no black president living in The White House until President Barack Obama. In the 20th century it was prohibited to invite black people to meals at the White House. The irony of this story is that slaves built the White House, black people weren't allowed to go in the White House. Now on the 21st century we have a black President Barack Obama and his family living in the White House that slaves built.

"Is it ironic that so many don't understand irony?" in this article two people co-workers are walking and talking about how their employers were providing them with a Thanksgiving lunch the day after Thanksgiving, and his co-worker tells his that is so ironic. It is ironic for the employes to invite there there co- workers to a Thanksgiving lunch the day after Thanksgiving. Why go to a lunch the day after Thanksgiving it is ironic in my opinion.

"Did you just hear a cow?" what's so ironic from this cartoon is that the two man are at sea and there are in a small sail boat and right next to and there is a big ship heading there way. These two men compare the sound of the boat horned as the sound of a cow what's so ironic is there in the middle of the sea and there can't be any cow near by because there's no land and they compared the sound of a boat to a cow.

In the lyrics of Alanis Morissette's Here are some lines of the lyrics "Ironic"

"An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day"

I don't think is ironic that an old man that turned ninety-eight dies the next day after winning the lottery.

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
A man that was afraid to fly get's on the plane waited his whole life to take that flight and the plane crashed i don't think this is ironic. A man being afraid but at the same time has waited to get on that flight and the planes crashes i don't find it ironic. The lyrics of these song i don't find them ironic.

What I find so ironic on a video was that a girl is talking about how she has 687 friends and her parents have 19 and she say's that's living that she has 687 friends. What find ironic is that having 687 friends is not living you sitting down behind the computer doing nothing and i bet that she don't even know have of that people on facebook. She call that living that ironic. Her parents are living the going bicycle with friends around the woods while she is at home behind the computer being on facebook.

Irony "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect." The Necklace is a good example as the other ones i have wrote about. Everyone has use irony before more than ones i know i had some people without noticing might be using irony. Irony can be use often. Some good example of irony can be The Necklace, the video where the is discussing that having 687 friends is living.
